Cologne Cathedral

Cologne is most famous for its gigantic cathedral.  In the 1200s this cathedral became one of the most important pilgrimage churches throughout Europe. At this time it was completely dismantled and rebuilt in a more gothic style. One of the most important reasons for all of these pilgrimages is the shrine of the Magi, there are also saints and archbishops buried in the chapel. During the second world war, this building was hit by 14 large ariel bombs, but was able to survive. It is still under construction and due to these blasts and weather damages it continuously is.

Inside the Cathedral

The Cathedral is built upon some roman ruins, as you enter there are parts of this uncovered and preserved for everyone to see.

The stairs up to the top of the cathedral are steep and spiralled. There are windows and you can see over the whole city.

The bells in this cathedral are massive, they are now mechanical but at one time this was the tool they used to sound them.
